Today we are testing s’mores cookies that use a chocolate chip cookie base with mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, and graham cracker chucks as the inclusions. Will they be jar worthy?

About the Series
If you’re new here, this series is inspired by my grandma’s Christmas tree cookie jar. Because of that jar, I love the idea of having a cookie jar on the counter always full of fresh cookies for anyone who stops by, or just to have a quick little treat already made. This series has been my way of putting cookies in my jar and trying out new cookie recipes to determine if they are worthy to be in the jar. I will provide the recipe I used along with a review and verdict. Previous cookies I’ve tried are –
- Lemon White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies
- Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip with Reese’s Pieces®
- Strawberries & Cream Cookies
This post is number four of “The Cookie Jar Series.” Enjoy!

The Recipe
Now that it’s June, it is officially summer time, and one of my favorite summer flavors is s’mores. The combination of graham cracker, chocolate, and marshmallow is simply *chef’s kiss,* and the thought of those flavors in a chocolate chip cookie sounds like a perfect treat to me. I have a chocolate chip cookie recipe I like to use because it’s simple and only uses one bowl, so I thought it would be the perfect base for trying out this combo in cookie form. Here are the steps I followed to make these cookies:
- Preheat oven to 350° and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large, microwave-safe mixing bowl, melt ½ cup butter (1 stick).
- You can also microwave it in a separate, smaller bowl and then add it to the mixing bowl, but I’m not trying to do more dishes.
- To the mixing bowl, add ½ cup brown sugar and ¼ cup white sugar and stir until well combined.
- Add in 1 large egg and 1 tsp vanilla extract and stir until well combined.
- Stir in ¼ tsp baking soda, ¼ tsp baking powder, and ¼ tsp salt.
- Next, add in 1½ cups flour and stir until all of it disappears into the dough.
- Mix in ½ cup chocolate chips, ½ cup mini marshmallows, and ½ cup crushed up graham crackers.
- You can adjust these amounts to your liking. Normally, this recipe calls for 1 cup of chocolate chips, but I felt like only doing ⅓ cup of each ingredient wouldn’t be enough.
- Scoop out dough using a cookie scoop and drop it on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes at 350°.
- When you remove the cookies from the oven, let them cool on the cookie sheet for 10 minutes, and then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool the rest of the way. Enjoy!
- It may be worth it to try them while still warm to really get the ooey gooey s’mores effect 😉

Review and Verdict
Like I said, I love s’mores flavored desserts. However, a common problem I find with those desserts is that the chocolate overpowers the other flavors. Unfortunately, I feel like that happened with these cookies, too. They really just tasted like regular chocolate chip cookies to me. They were still so good, though, because that chocolate chip cookie recipe is the bomb (I know using that phrase is dating me, but oh well); I just wished the marshmallow and graham cracker flavors stood out a little more. My favorite part of a s’more is the marshmallow, so missing out on that was a little disappointing.
Here’s what I love about these cookies, though – the texture. They are incredibly soft and chewy with a little bit of a fudge-like center to them, which is absolutely delicious. I believe it’s the use of melted butter, instead of softened, that causes that. Also, they are really easy to make all in one bowl. I used my mixer, but you really don’t have to, which makes this recipe more accessible for people who don’t have that luxury.
With that being said, we still need to ask – “Are they jar worthy?” Reminder of the rating scale:
- Jar Regular – These are the cookies that will become a go-to, repeat recipe.
- Jar Guest – These cookies are tasty and were great to try, but they just aren’t top tier.
- Not My Jar, but Maybe Yours – These are cookies that weren’t my taste, but still worth trying.
- Toss the Cookies, Keep the Jar – These are cookies that are a hard no, likely due to a faulty recipe.
S’mores Cookies = Jar Guest
Because the chocolate overpowered the other flavors, I feel like I can’t call these a jar regular…yet! I want to try them again and use less chocolate chips (or maybe mini ones), to see if that makes a difference in the balance of flavors for me. If you like the chocolate more than the marshmallow and graham cracker, this balance of flavors may be right for you. Either way, the cookies were still really good, and the regular chocolate chip version of these is already a jar regular, so I feel “jar guest” is the best rating. If you decide to try them out, let me know!
