Cookie Jar Series #5: Cookies & Cream Cookies

This month, I have tested a cookies and cream cookie recipe. These cookies use a brown sugar cookie dough with chunks of Oreo cookies throughout. Will they be worthy of the jar?

About the Series

If this is your first time encountering my cookie jar series, this series of posts is inspired by my grandma’s Christmas tree cookie jar. Seeing that jar on her table filled with cookies sparked a love of having a cookie jar on the counter full of fresh cookies for anyone who stops by. I’ve also come to love the ability to easily grab a sweet little treat when the craving strikes. This series has been my way of putting cookies in my jar and trying out new recipes. As part of the series, I determine if they are worthy to be in the cookie jar, providing the recipe I used along with a review and verdict. So far, the cookies I’ve tried are –

This post is number five of “The Cookie Jar Series.” Enjoy!

The Recipe

I was originally going to try a recipe for oatmeal butterscotch cookies because I love anything butterscotch, but my husband wasn’t a fan of that idea. I let him pick the flavor for this cookie and he requested something with Oreos. I have seen lots of different pins about Oreo cookies, which seem to just be a normal chocolate chip cookie, but swap the chocolate chips for crushed Oreos. That’s basically what I did to make these. Here’s the recipe –

  • Preheat oven to 350° and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large, microwave-safe mixing bowl, melt ½ cup butter (1 stick).
    • We’re adding all of the ingredients to this one bowl, so we have less dishes.
  • To the mixing bowl, add ½ cup brown sugar and ¼ cup white sugar and stir until well combined.
  • Add in 1 large egg and 1 tsp vanilla extract and stir until well combined.
  • Stir in ¼ tsp baking soda, ¼ tsp baking powder, and ¼ tsp salt.
  • Next, add in 1½ cups flour and stir until all of it disappears into the dough.
  • Place 15-20 Oreo cookies in a plastic baggie, and smash with a rolling pin to desired size pieces. Fold the pieces into the cookie dough.
    • You can adjust the amount of cookies to your liking. Normally, this recipe calls for 1 cup of chocolate chips, but I wanted more than a cup of Oreo pieces.
  • Scoop out dough using a cookie scoop, roll into a ball, and place it on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes at 350°.
  • When you remove the cookies from the oven, let them cool on the cookie sheet for 10 minutes, and then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool the rest of the way. Enjoy!

Review and Verdict

Cookies and cream is such a beloved flavor, and I completely understand why my husband picked it for these cookies. I think something to keep in mind with cookies like this, though, is that they won’t taste exactly like an Oreo because that’s only part of the overall cookie. That being said, I still feel like these cookies missed the mark. They tasted good, but I just felt like they were lacking. I added a good bit of Oreo pieces to the cookies, but that flavor didn’t come through as much as I hoped, and there wasn’t much of a creaminess to them like you expect with cookies and cream.

One of the things I liked about these cookies was that they were soft. Normally, when using this recipe for regular chocolate chip cookies, the inside is more chewy and fudge-like, so I don’t know what caused these ones to be soft. Either way, it was a nice change from what we normally have.

You may be able to guess, but we still have to ask if these cookies are jar worthy. As a reminder, the following is my rating scale:

  • Jar Regular – These are the cookies that will become a go-to, repeat recipe.
  • Jar Guest – These cookies are tasty and were great to try, but they just aren’t top tier.
  • Not My Jar, but Maybe Yours – These are cookies that weren’t my taste, but still worth trying.
  • Toss the Cookies, Keep the Jar – These are cookies that are a hard no, likely due to a faulty recipe.

I really just didn’t like these. We still ate them all, but I think I need to follow a recipe that someone else has tried and perfected to get the kind of flavor I’m wanting from a cookies and cream cookie. Simply swapping out chocolate chips for cookie pieces provided less flavor than I was looking for, so it didn’t work for me. If you are wanting a little more subtle flavor, though, this could be a recipe for you. Or, if you like a challenge, maybe you can take the recipe I used and improve it. Either way, if you try them out let me know what you think!
